NAME: The Mine Car
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT: Gothic era
DANGER LEVEL: High
GENERAL STINKINESS: High
COMMON DENIZENS: Humans, ornithrops, bearkin
CUISINE: Peasant gruel, bird seed

There is no sender. Or objective?

But that's fine, probably! The car itself is completely functional, and features a fully developed society.

Passengers will arrive in this car and be immediately greeted by a fog that chills them to their core. The car around them is vast, and yet deathly silent. They'll find themselves starting off in a forest of petrified wood, the ground hard and unyielding underneath their feet, with flora and fauna in various stages of decay around them. While the fog around them is thick, the lights of a nearby village can still be seen from a distance, and as they travel, the dirt road will give way to cobblestone.

Eventually they'll be greeted with a signpost, welcoming them to the town of MINECRAFTIA.

While Minecraftia's denizens are harrowed and distressed, they're quick to warn the passengers traveling through of the ailment, a mysterious illness that is plaguing their town. It's been leaving even healthy youths bedridden, and while the town mayor has passionately declared that he will find a solution, it appears that there's no cure in sight.

Locations

Minecraftia is a foreboding little town, even in the daylight, with murky skies above and fog blanketing the roads. Still, the denizens persist through their daily routines, and won't stop the passengers from exploring.

Clinic: The town's only clinic with the town's only doctor. It's a small, rickety building that operates all hours of the day. Between the rapid spread of sickness and the steady depletion of supplies, it's a grim place to be nowadays. Anyone healthy who visits might be roped in to help, and those who look ill will be quarantined with an uncomfortable bedroll and thin blanket.

Cemetery: Located on the outskirts of town, the cemetery is home to dead bodies, even deader earth, and a deadpan gravekeeper. The exit door is here in a flower-covered plot, but cannot be opened.

Chicken House: A barnyard building home to the town's chickens. Lately they've been more worked up than usual, and taken to flying the coop and finding refuge by digging their claws into the scalps of bystanders. Agitating one chicken may cause a whole flock to descend on you!

The Dark Woods: The village is surrounded by what was once lush woods, but the trees now stand dark and eerie, an unusually thick fog rolling between them. While there are some of the usual, woodland creatures chirruping in the dense silence, they're hard to find. Monsters, meanwhile, are much more common.

The Mines: In the heart of the woods are entrances to the town's expansive system of mines. Stepping inside shows that the dirt and stone is laced with beautiful gems and minerals, but passengers will be shooed away by miners if they try to explore any deeper. It seems there's several dangerous mine shafts underfoot, as well as past attacks by what seems to be mole monsters.

Mayor's Mansion: The largest building in Minecraftia, situated on a hill. While Mayor Chadsef's staff welcomes guests, they will be cautioned not to explore past the lobby, which just smells a little like cleaning chemicals thanks to a diligent maid crew.

Denizens
Players may use denizens as convenient in threads, as well as these NPCs, except for the Mayor. He's a very busy man!

Madam Vermeer: The Madam is a human extremely afraid that she'll die before seeing her son marry. Which means that she is hunting the streets for eligible men and women, and whisking them in droves away into her mansion to be made over, trained in the art of serving, etc. before presenting them to her son.

Cassy Cassatt: Cassy is an ornithrop and the owner of the chicken house. She's shorthanded nowadays, but business-savvy enough to prey on considerate bystanders. She'll rope anyone she sees into helping out, whether it's collecting eggs, feeding or breeding.

Turner: Turner is a bearkin, and one of the nurses at the clinic. He's taken to drinking his weight in mead whenever he's off the clock, and it's not uncommon for his body to be seen unconscious on the road. He'll try to flee or swat blindly if anyone tries to help him, but he really does need help getting home.

Chadsef: The mayor of Minecraftia, who is notably wealthier than the rest of the citizens. He's young and inexperienced, but carries a Birds of Economics degree, and is determined to bring jobs to the town. He'll just need to make sure people are alive to do them first!

Other
The longer that passengers remain in the car, the more they'll learn, and soon they'll realize the following:

  1. They are not immune to the illness. They can't determine what it is that triggers it. At first it's a sense of fatigue, then hunger and irritability. Then, the numbness will begin, starting in their extremities and spreading up their limbs, until that numbness turns into pain. Eventually that pain will lead to madness, a state of delirium where they begin to behave erratically, endangering themselves and those around them.

  2. There is something in the woods. Though the passengers saw nothing when they arrived in the woods, at night they can hear growling. Venturing outside will reveal grotesque creatures emerging from the fog, rampaging into the town and tearing flesh and stone with their massive claws. These creatures appear rabid, familiar but warped, and they swarm the town with no regard for their own safety or benefit. Examples: (1) (2) (3) (4)

  3. Corpses are disappearing. Despite deaths, the cemetery isn't seeing any more business. Rumour has it that a certain wealthy denizen has been paying to have the corpses taken away. But to where, and why, remains unknown…

Numbers
Numbers! Everyone starts with one that glows on their bodies — as a fun thread mechanic, we suggest they're somewhere visible, but it's up to you!

Because while this is not IC knowledge yet, numbers are determined by how troubled your character is. This may be based on their past actions and crimes, but also alienating habits, regrets, personality flaws, trauma, etc — a higher number does not necessarily mean they're a bad person, but it may signify a difficult time in their life, or substantial personal issues.

As passengers enter this car, they'll notice that their numbers may begin to change in response to certain actions and decisions. The general rule is that numbers change as characters work through their issues. If they make a decision that serves to better themselves, their number will decrease. But if they make a decision that is ill-intentioned, their number will increase. Players can change their number as they see fit going forward.

OOC Notes
Exploration: Players may submit on-going threads here to get a short mod tag with further discoveries in any given location. Characters can potentially earn items or clues as to the car's objective this way. Please limit your explorations to one per player; we will let you all know if we have the capacity to do more!

[That it could have been a long-brewing rot has also crossed her mind. Most likely it was. Though she's still not done being furious about the literal weeks wasted collecting stupid seeds, she knows her suggestions now are pure hypotheticals.]

I g-guess it would have been pointless, yeah... [She raps her fingers on her knee, ponderous.] It's not like we were coming in with a b-bunch of medicine, anyway.

[There was that one old guy at the clinic trying to teach the doctor about germ theory, but frankly? He might as well been giving lectures on quantum physics. There's no way they could advance civilization by two hundred years with only the clothes on their backs and regurgitated education.

Obi-Wan smiles at her, and she hates to admit it but her heart gives a little flutter. All right, she's not one for older men or beards especially, but he has charm. She'll give him that.]

What? [She straightens some, baffled. The direction of her thoughts?] Y-you mean being a pessimist?

[Most people were annoyed by it. Also, he wasn't being clear.]

As in...it's g-good for me to think this way? Or bad?

[ His words have merit; it would be pretty depressing if they also fell sick. The sad thing she wants to do is shamble around town feeling sad about the lack of good restaurants and sad about her own ailing body. Oh, but hmm— ]

Maybe I could help heal us, if that happened. Not [ she adds hastily ] that I want either of us to get sick, or anyone else, but the train gave me some sort of magic accessory for my sword. Supposedly it can heal people, though I'm not sure if it's just from injuries or from other stuff too.

[ She chatters as they walk along, surprisingly upbeat given the overall gloomy atmosphere of the city. That's always been her charm point though, too stupid perservering to give up easily. Her attention's pulled towards the cemetary exit when Ardbert gestures towards them, her gaze refocusing. ]

Oh! Look at the flowers. They're so pretty!

[😬😬😬

Normally Toko would feel grateful she can't read minds, but that chilly chuckle gives her no illusions about his train of thought. Sweat beads at her brow as she gives serious consideration to making an escape. It'd be doomed, nobody ever outran a psychopath by diving under the table first, but she'd rather die trying than wait for the next move. Should she sneeze? Maybe Jill would be agile enough to make it.

Before she has to make that call, his mood shifts. The focus is off her, (thank god, just keep him talking, finish this conversation, and fuck off to the furthest edge of town at once), the lights seeming to dim with his sudden glower.

No, not seeming to. They are. There's a sudden chill as his eyes glow red. The lights flicker, as if a restless spirit were answering a séance call.]

Gojo? [The name sounds a little familiar. Probably something she saw scrolling through the directory. It's nothing from a myth, which is what she was expecting to hear.

And fortunately, there's nothing to link it back to the blindfolded man she explored the mines with. Otherwise she might be drawing even more of Sukuna's ire.]

Wh-what did he do?

[WELL THEN Jenna is now forbidden from dropping Gojo. It's game rules. Breach of contract results in non-pleasurable punishment.]

[Emphasis on non-pleasurable.

At her question, his focus shifts back to her. The lights brighten as the murderous gleam dims instead. He exhales a huff through his nose. He isn't inclined to tell her the details. That he was bested by him.

Well, he was only one finger, then.]

I have a score to settle with him, let's just say that. [And in saying so, he decides right after to grab her knee and jerk her closer. The movement causes her skirt to slide up and he unabashedly looks at her thigh as he looms over her.]

I knew I saw something like this, too. There's your number. And, look, haha! That's a higher number than most! It's from that game, isn't it?

[ She flinches a little when he turns the full force of his gaze on her, but her sword remains upright and unwavering in her hand. Cripes, this guy really just gives off the crazy vibes huh? But it's not like she hasn't faced off against people just as nasty. Admittedly she'd had her friends to back her up before and now all she has is one sword and a ward full of sick people, but better to at least put up fight then just let him walk all over people.

Literally. ]

Geez, did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something? None of these people did anything to you!

[ Please take a chill pill, Sukuna. Or like, go touch some grass, hold a hand, etc. ]

But fine. I'll take you on. Just....go outside first! [ Really. She's going to try and negotiate now. ] I don't want this whole place falling on top of everyone.

[ Kurapika frowns, similarly looking just Put Out by the pig's antics. And by the very obvious taunt from the other. Aggravated, he sighs, gesturing down to the pig below: ]

Didn't you hear me? Fighting them alone is—

[ The foundation shakes again, and it seems more forceful this time - he stumbles with his footing, and what's more is that the building gives a very suspicious creak as it wobbles back into place. This isn't exactly one of the sturdiest buildings in town. Perhaps worst of all is that as the pig backs up again to deliver what would likely be the fatal blow to the building's foundation, there's some hushed cries coming from the space below where the two of them are standing, sounds from people that are using the building as a hiding spot.

Kurapika's eyes widen a fraction at the realization, and he doesn't waste a beat before moving to the ledge of the building, giving a look back to his companion. ]

Very well. Do as you please. But this building will come down unless that thing is taken care of. [ It certainly wasn't cowardice that was keeping Kurapika up on the tops of buildings instead of down there fighting the beasts - because he hops down to the ground without hesitation, calling back up to Kaeya with the same challenging tone he'd been met with. ] I'd suggest moving to another one, since you're staying behind.
constrainer: (pic#15044250)

[personal profile] constrainer 2021-09-24 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
[ It makes sense that someone accustomed to them wouldn't find them strange - Kurapika nods in understanding, starting off in the direction of where he last sensed the rabbit. ]

That'd be a great help. [ Having "guard animals" of any kind, even if they're supernatural and not completely controlled, is better than trying to go this hodge-podge mission that he made up on the fly alone. ] To be honest, I'm not suited to combat with these monsters on my own. But I believe this is important.

[ So he came in here anyway, even though tussling with big animals like this is not his gig... anyway, he doesn't seem any less confident about going deeper into the forest, turning his head to look at his companion. ]

If you don't mind my asking... just how similar are they to what you've seen? In your home world.
constrainer: (pic#15044236)

[personal profile] constrainer 2021-09-24 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
[ Kurapika turns her proposed deal over in his mind several times for clues and loopholes, knowing that it's always a shot in the dark making this sort of "I scratched your back, now you scratch mine" agreement. Is it true that she did the leg work of concocting that lie? Yes. His only claim to equality in the matter is that he played along instead of blatantly denying everything he said. So, with a tired sigh: ]

Fine.

[ He eventually decides it's probably better to just put up with it now, rather than earn the ire of someone who can easily commit to such an embarrassing (and loud) act. And besides, Kurapika's used to making shady and hasty deals, not thinking far ahead of all the potential consequences. Right now, all he cares about is making sure there will be a definite end to this arrangement. ]

But I'll reserve the right to refuse to anything that exceeds the effort already extended. [ He holds his hand out to make it Official, even. ] Do we have a deal?
constrainer: (pic#15044305)

[personal profile] constrainer 2021-09-24 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
[ Because he's given the chance to, Kurapika does take the opportunity to look at the unlit lightsaber more closely. It's, of course, foreign technology to him - he can't think of anything in his own modern world that resembles this closely. Then again, he'd only left his home deep in the forests of Lukso six years ago - many things in the modern world like bus schedules and television shows were things he simply didn't grow up with or understand. Thus, coming across contraptions from an entirely different world doesn't shock him as much as it perhaps should. ]

Their minds? [ His tone goes up in genuine question, still conceptualizing the Force as some sort of physical control, something to exert on objects and living beings. Not anything mental. ] If they weren't "too far gone," could you control them?

[ It isn't a question laced with disgust or incredulity - no, it's something closer to... familiarity. ]

I assumed you would just move them. Like the boulder.

[ Not touching her is probably the wisest move right about now, considering how many gross germs she's picked up from the ground.

Toko is once again right, and despite the wooziness still cottoning her brain, Beatrix listens to everything the other girl says. (On the other hand, if Toko had written all this down, she wouldn't have read a word.) ]

I know.

[ The alcohol drifts sluggishly through her system, its depressive effects muting her usual good cheer. She's shockingly quiet for some time longer, chin still tucked into her forearms as she stares ahead into the murky darkness. But sitting around and brooding has never been her thing, so it's not long before she's springing back into action, bolting back up onto her feet as determination blazes in her eyes.

Or more accurately, fumbling her way upright, with more than a few stumbles here and there. ]

[Yeah but they're usually flickering your lights and opening your cupboards, not roasting you and stealing your beer.

Toko watches in clear dismay as the drink is going, going, gone. True, it tasted terrible and lay thicker on her head than expected, but it was hers! Her very first, and now it's been snatched away by some old codger. One who was messing with her head, playing on her paranoias. Her diminutive fists clench on thin air.]

Wh-what the hell? Who said I was c-coping with anything?! [Outside of her, uh, general everything, it would be impossible to tell why she was drinking in the first place. Not unless he was a mind reader. Toko gives another tight hiccup before carrying on.] It's not like they have s-sake or chardonnay or...or martinis or something! I just wanted to t-try something! Oh. I'm, u-uh...I'll be twenty soon. [Which could be legal drinking age. Depending on where you live. She casts her eyes around the bar and points at a nearby table, where a pair of villagers are wining and dining.] Look! Those guys are y-younger than me, and they let them order whatever!

[If it's legal here, she's allowed. Don't stifle her.]

[A score to settle. That's useful information. Too bad she's granted no time to parse it before he seizes her leg and yanks her back in.

Toko yelps, short and sharp, turning a few patron's heads their way. She barely notices, she's too busy grappling for sanctuary, grabbing him by the wrist and vying to pull free by any means necessary. Her pulse has shot from zero to sixty (or is it sixty to one-twenty? Not like this was a quiet evening out to start with) and her voice trembles, but she fights the hold with renewed vigor. Heels gritted to the floor, bodily pulling away. Just like a fox in a foothold trap.]

Wh-What the hell?! Let go! [Her number? It's higher than most, yes, but what does that have to do with anything?] I told you, I didn't d-do anything in that g-game!

But she doesn't have time to worry, already stepping away to head for the monster's head. ]

Y-yeah, you're right. If you can keep it in place, I'll get its head!

Maybe she's just a sucker for a slim blond in a suit. Maybe she likes 'em a little frosty, what can she say? Kuuderes are cute-deres. That said, once you've had double churned, hot fudge, choco-caramel swirl, there's no going back to shaved ice. Jill sighs and shakes her head.] Too bad for you, there's no way you'd measure up. Or is it lucky for you?

[Probably the latter.

Regardless, she slaps her palm into his and gives a vigorous shake. Her smile grows impossibly wider.]

[ A sword that could heal wounds and possibly even diseases? That's not the sort of thing one comes across every day, and it's even more interesting that the train apparently granted it to her. ]

I imagine there's only one way to find out for certain. How does that... work, exactly? [ Does she just slice into someone like she would if she was going to harm them? It's difficult to conjure up a mental image here. Ardbert draws closer to Beatrix for a moment, casting a glance down to her sword in its scabbard. ] And when you said the train gave it to you, what does that mean?

[ The flowers are pretty, and Ardbert is planning to inspect the exit door with a bit more care, but he's been briefly derailed by all this healing sword talk. ]

[Try as she might, he's an immovable object and just seems highly entertained by her attempts to free herself. His nails dig into her skin again, thumb at her inner thigh and other fingers framing those numbers.

After a while, though, it gets old.]

Stop moving or I'll make sure you never will again. [He commands, lifting his eyes from her leg to put the weight of his attention on her face.]

What did I say about lying, you little fool? Maybe you haven't figured it out yet, but these numbers symbolize how much suffering and misery we've caused. Or it's the amount of cursed energy we're capable of using. What I don't get is why only certain people have them...
